Chuck Copenace

Oshki Manitou | Symphony POPs Concert

8 Original Pieces, charts provided

Winnipeg-based trumpeter, Chuck Copenace transforms his debut album Oshki Mantiou, to collaborate with orchestras across Canada.

Oshki Manitou finds the Ojibway musician expanding dramatically on his previous work as a trumpet player, arranger, and composer, fusing contemporary interpretations of sweat-lodge melodies with jazz and elements of dance and electronica.

For Chuck Copenace, Oshki Manitou is a decidedly personal musical expression, a gift to his family and community, and a means of sharing how ceremonial melodies have changed his musical outlook and united his creativity and spirituality.

La Nef

Sea Songs & Shanties | Vocal Ensemble Concert

Symphony show also available (charts provided)

The journey of Sea Songs & Shanties began in Montréal, Canada, in 2012 when a band of seven musicians worked with Ubisoft to create the memorable soundtrack to Assassin’s Creed III, followed by Black Flag in 2013 and Rogue in 2014. The success of these games and the huge popularity of their soundtracks convinced La Nef to bring the group together again for a concert in November 2014

The Fugitives

RIDGE ft. The Fugitives | Theatre, Music

Brendan McLeod and The Fugitives examine misconceptions and varying perspectives around the battle of Vimy Ridge, while drawing parallels to other formative events in our nation’s past. Featuring inventive musical interpretations of WWI soldier songs (often referred to as ‘Trench Songs’), Ridge probes difficult yet necessary questions about how and why we grieve. Trench songs were written by frontline soldiers during WW1. Essentially protest songs, they were often parodies of well-known tunes.

The Fugitives perform their 5th and JUNO nominated album Trench Songs to accompany the WWI storytelling and thought-provoking narrative McLeod provides. Based on the writing by WWI soldiers, the band wrote new melodies and music for these words. The result is a poignant and stripped-back collection of work that emphasizes the emotional content of the lyrics and continues the long tradition of folk music reshaping songs over time — the same way soldiers reshaped these songs in the trenches.

A vivid, kinetic ride through history, as well as an intimate, personal examination of our connection to the past, Ridge is a visceral work that passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives.

The Fugitives | Ballet BC collaboration

OVER THE RIDGE ft. The Fugitives & Ballet BC

Contemporary Dance, Theatre, Music [IN DEVELOPMENT]

In Over the Ridge, The Fugitives collaborate with choreographer Jacob Williams to expand this narrative through dance. Developed in partnership with Ballet BC, Over the Ridge adds original contemporary dance to the storytelling and music, resulting in a kinetic ride through history that delves our strong connection to the past and passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives.

In 2020, The Fugitives premiered “RIDGE”, a musical storytelling show that examined the WW1 Canadian soldier experience during the Battle of Vimy. It was named a Top 10 Globe & Mail Arts Event of the Year, and spawned the JUNO nominated album Trench Songs.
